Choosing the correct abrasive grain size is therefore essential for achieving both productive material removal and reliable surface quality.

How Grit Size Influences Grinding Performance

  • Material removal efficiency: Coarser grits have larger, more aggressive cutting edges that remove stock faster, making them ideal for high-removal operations.
  • Grinding texture: Grit size determines the depth and spacing of the grinding lines left on the workpiece surface, which directly shapes the final surface pattern.
  • Surface roughness: Finer grits produce smoother surfaces with lower Ra values, while coarser grits leave a rougher finish.
