Resin abrasives belong to organic abrasives, which are characterized by a wide range of applications, certain elasticity, high bonding strength, and excellent polishing performance. They are widely used in rough, precision, fine, and polishing grinding processes. Resin abrasives exhibit the following features:
1. Compared to ceramic bond, resin bond exhibits higher bonding strength, enabling resin sand wheels to achieve grinding line speeds of 80–120 m/s and withstand significant grinding pressure. Heavy-duty sand wheels can endure grinding pressures as high as 10×10^4 to 40×10^4 N, making them widely applicable in the steel industry for rough grinding processes such as various steel ingots and billets. Specialized high-speed heavy-duty sand wheels for rough grinding offer safe operation, are suitable for high-speed and large-feed grinding, and deliver high grinding efficiency.
2. Possessing certain elasticity, resin abrasives exhibit good toughness, plasticity, and ductility. Their elastic modulus (E) is several tens of times lower than that of ceramic abrasives. Therefore, resin abrasives are suitable for manufacturing thin abrasive wheels and high-speed cutting abrasive wheels of various specifications. Additionally, due to their elastic deformation, they can cushion the impact of grinding forces, resulting in superior grinding performance, polishing effects, and improved surface roughness of the machined parts.
3. Can be made into various complex shapes and special-purpose grinding tools: Due to the low curing temperature of resin-bonded grinding tools, they can harden at room temperature with minimal shrinkage, allowing the production of tools with complex shapes and special requirements. Examples include resin wheels reinforced with glass fibers, porous resin wheels and grooved wheels with excellent chip removal and heat dissipation properties; bolted grinding wheels, electrolytic grinding wheels, and polishing wheels that improve grinding process conditions; as well as non-standard wheels such as cylindrical, bowl-shaped, and butterfly-shaped ones.
